On Saturday, June 23, the YWCA Oklahoma City will host its eighth annual Purple Sash Gala at 6:30 p.m., at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, 1700 NE 63 St. The event will include an evening of fashion, food, wine and silent and live auctions. All proceeds benefit the YWCA Oklahoma City, the only shelter for battered women and children in Oklahoma County.
“Purple Sash is our largest, most elegant event of the year,” said Janet L. Peery, CEO YWCA Oklahoma City. “It is our way of celebrating survivors of domestic violence and of raising funds and awareness for those still fighting for their voices and their lives.”
The evening will include dinner catered by the Skirvin Hilton, a wine pull, a New York style fashion show presented by Ruth Meyers, and live and the auctions. Guests can bid on items including a Kia Sorento SUV donated by the Oklahoma City Thunder player James Harden, a trips to Maui, New York and Los Angeles, artwork by children in the YWCA shelter and more. Attendees will have a chance to win a cruise for two.
“This is the most incredible and special event,” said Cheryl Borelli, Edmond resident, YWCA-OKC board member and senior vice president at BancFirst in Oklahoma City. “In 2011 the YWCA netted $157,000 to help victims of domestic violence in our community.”
SandRidge Energy is the 2012 Purple Sash Title Sponsor, and the Chickasaw Nation is this year’s Legacy Sponsor. Other sponsors include Chesapeake Energy, Devon Energy, BancFirst, Eventures Inc., 1-800-2SellHomes, Simon’s Petroleum, Crescent Consulting, LLC, Comtech Design Print and Mail, Arvest Bank, Frankfurt Short Bruza Associates, P.C., Oklahoma Women’s Coalition, QuiBids, Traction Marketing, Tyler Media, and Trichology Salon among others. More than 15,000 women, children and men receive help through YWCA programs. The YWCA of Oklahoma City provides emergency shelter for battered women and children, counseling, support groups, childcare, transitional housing, financial literacy, batterer’s intervention and other services.
Additionally, ongoing community outreach efforts of the YWCA provide education on domestic and family violence, the empowerment of women and strategies to end racism.
A full range of services is also offered to help the primary and secondary survivors of sexual assault regain control over their lives. From responding to calls on the 24-hour Rape Crisis Hotline, to hospital advocacy and follow-up counseling, the YWCA-OKC is meeting the needs of hundreds of sexual assault survivors each year.
