In this week’s Capitol Report segment, Patrick B. McGuigan applauded a compromise plan that will allow the KIPP Academy charter school to expand into elementary grades (in 2017) and into high school (in 2018). Quoting syndicated columnist Walter Williams, the CapitolBeatOK editor said poor academic performance for inner-city schools is not preordained.
“What happens at KIPP is not a miracle, it is a result of quality education,” he told News9 reporter Alex Cameron. He characterized KIPP’s local founder, Tracy McDaniel, as a change agent, and “a man on fire” for the city’s children.
Turning to the Republican National Convention held his past week, McGuigan applauded Willie Robertson’s prayer for Louisiana, and the speeches of House Speaker Paul Ryan and former Attorney General Mikee Mukasey.
McGuigan said the nomination of Donald Trump will “feed divisions” in the nation. Michael Gerson, a writer McGuigan respects, said choosing Trump as the nominee makes the GOP “a different and diminished party.”
