OKLAHOMA CITY – The Greater Mount Carmel Baptist Church (GMCBC) of Oklahoma City has called an Interim Pastor to assist in their transition period following the loss of the much beloved Pastor K. Gerone Free (May 5, 1954 – October 21, 2020).
The congregation has selected Dr. George E. Young, Sr as the Interim Pastor. Sen. Young will formally start his service to the congregation on March 15.
Dedicating his life to preaching, mentoring, and pastoring, Dr. Free was called to pastor the Greater Mount Carmel Baptist Church in 1988, where he served until his death.
Free was a member of the Progressive Oklahoma Baptist State Convention (POBSC) and the Baptist Minister’s Association in Oklahoma City. He was Board President of the One Church One Child Adoption Program of Oklahoma for 15 Years and was Board President of the National One Church One Child Adoption Program under the Founder, Father George Clement.
He was a member of the NAACP, the Oklahoma City Concert of Prayer and a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
Dr. Free graduated from Rancho High School, and attended the University of Nevada at Las Vegas where he earned his undergraduate degree in marketing. He earned his Masters of Divinity from Virginia Union in Richmond, VA, an honorary doctorate degree from the Determined Biblical Theological Institute of Baltimore, MD and an honorary doctorate degree from the Fellowship Bible Institute.
Reverend Doctor George E. Young, Sr has served for forty years in ministry, with thirty years as pastor to two churches. He retired from 30 years of Pastoral service in 2013 and was elected in 2014 to the Oklahoma House of Representatives and in 2018 elected to the Oklahoma State Senate.
Young will continue to serve as the State Senator for Senate District 48.
“In these times, our acts must be intentional and, in this moment, and time, I am feeling spiritually led to accept this opportunity to serve as Interim Pastor,” Young said.
Young began his ministry journey at Faith Memorial Baptist Church under Pastor M. A. Curry, he remains a member of that congregation.
A member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Young continues as an adjunct professor for Phillips Theological Seminary in Tulsa. As Pastor, he initiated a partnership that sponsors the largest Back to School Block Party and School Supply Give-Away in the Northeast Quadrant of Oklahoma City. Dr. Young is the CEO of Young Management Consulting, a mediation and nonprofit management and leadership development firm.
