In the Oct. 22 edition of Capitol Report on News9, the CBS affiliate in Oklahoma City, commentator Patrick B. McGuigan encouraged voters to support State Question 790, the state’s constitutional version of the “Blaine Amendment.”
McGuigan said the archaic language in Section 5 of the state constitution could endanger future cooperation between government and faith-based organizations in provision of services to the poor, refugees, disabled persons, homeless people, the hungry and others. McGuigan commended Oklahoma City Catholic Archbishop Paul Coakley for a commentary, posted on CapitolBeatOK, encouraging Oklahomans to support the question.
In other news, McGuigan pointed to recent analyses suggesting “the oil war is over, and we won.” He said Saudi Arabia and other OPEC cartel countries have abandoned efforts to depress oil and natural gas prices. The result is modest uptick in domestic energy production. That could be a prelude to improvements in the Oklahoma economy and state government revenues.
