As summer winds down, the Myriad Botanical Gardens in downtown Oklahoma City offers tons of fun for families and individuals of all ages during August.
On Wednesday evening, August 3, Sonic Summer Movies will present a free screening of Stephen Spielberg’s Raiders of the Lost Ark on the Great Lawn. Pre-show activities will begin at 8 p.m. with the film starting at 9 p.m. Participating food trucks include Pitchfork Kitchen and Bakery, Cornish Smoke House, Snow S’more, Fresh Ice, J-Stews and Ice House.
In preparation for Dancing in the Gardens, learn the Tango with 3Sixty Dance Studio on Thursday, August 4 at 6:30 p.m. with small group one-hour dance lessons held in the South Lobby of the Crystal Bridge. Participants will get one-on-one instruction to be prepared for a fun night of line dancing. Cost is Members $10, Non-members $15. Must be 13 or older. Registration deadline is Tuesday, August 2.
On Friday, August 5, another chance to Tango will take place in the Seasonal Place by the Ice House. This free event is open to all ages. Lessons start at 7 p.m. with dancing from 8 – 10 p.m. This free event offers DJ music by Chasen Shaw of PartyBox, and dance instruction by Studio 3Sixty.
Staff of Wine and Palette will help you create your own original piece of art featuring Grumpy Cat on a 16”x 20” canvas on Saturday, August 6, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. More fun from the Painting in the Gardens Series, held in the Crystal Bridge South Lobby, will take place on September 17 and October 15. Also on August 6, families will enjoy the Internet Cat Video Festival starting at 7:30 p.m. on the Great Lawn. Sponsored by Midtown Vets and the Tinker Federal Credit Union, this 75-minute experience will reveal the Internet’s best cat videos for your viewing pleasure.. Pre-screening festivities include booths sponsored the Bella Foundation, OKC Pets Magazine, A1 Pet Emporium, House of Clay, Full Circe Bookstore and A Date with Iris, along with food trucks and live music. The Internet Cat Video festival is produced & curated by the Walker Arts Center.
On Sunday, August 7, 14 and 28, from 9 a.m. to noon the 3rd annual Chess in the Gardens challenge will be held in the Seasonal Plaza near the Ice House. This free event will be hosted by the Oklahoma University Chess Club.
The free Arts Council of OKC’s Sunday Twilight Concerts will be held on August 7, 13, 21 & 28, from 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. on the Great Lawn. Come early to enjoy pre-show activities and food trucks. See the website for the film schedule.
On Wednesday, August 10 at 9 p.m. the final, free Sonic Summer Movies event on the Great Lawn will feature Spider Man.
Chef Extraordinaire Juan Herrera will share some cooking basics during the Pizza Pie Party on Saturday, August 13, from 10 a.m. to noon in the Park House Event Center. Kids can create their own solar pizza ovens as well as their own 8” pizza pie. The Chef will take participants on a tour of the Garden to select herbs and fresh veggies to add to their creations. A healthy dessert will finish off the meal. Members cost $10 and nonmembers $12. Best for ages 8-12. Register by Tuesday, August 9.
On Thursday, August 18, the Full Moon OKC Bike Ride and 5K Run will begin at the Great Lawn Band Shell. The Run steps off at 8 p.m. and the Ride starts at 9 p.m. This popular event takes place during each full moon through October. Those who make their $5 donation to these events will be entered in a drawing for prizes from Red Coyote Running & Fitness and Schlegel Bicycles.
A special free Park After Dark concert will be held on Friday, August 10 featuring local music favorite Graham Colton and The Tap Band from 8 – 11 p.m.. Presented by HRG catering, the event will take place at Ice House Plaza. All ages are welcome to dance under the stars and enjoy food by the Ice House. No reservations are required.
Paddle boarding will be available at the Garden’s Lake on Saturday, August 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Presented by friends at the Boathouse District in Oklahoma City, 15-minute sessions will be available for $5 per person.
Join local guru, Jared Toay of Jared’s ProPops for an Introduction to Fermented Foods at the Terrace Room on Saturday, August 20 from 1 – 2 p.m. Jared will show guests how to start their own kombucha, while offering some tasty fermented foods to sample. Members cost $6; nonmembers $8. Register by Tuesday, August 16.
On Thursday, August 25, from 8:30-10 p.m. join members of the OKC Astronomy Club on the Great Lawn for Astronomy Nights in the Gardens. Presented by Tinker Federal Credit Union, club members will have their telescopes available for all to check the sky show. This free event is open to the public.
