Paseo Arts District sign hero

Staff Report

The art of Ryan Christopher will be featured at Paseo Art Space (3022 Paseo Drive) in “Culture and the Human Condition” – opening at the June 3 First Friday and running through June 25.

The First Friday Gallery Walk lasts 6-10 p.m. in the historic Paseo Arts District of Oklahoma City.

A featured musical performer on June 3 will be Stephen Salewon. According to an online biographical sketch, “Stephen Salewon is a singer/songwriter. He grew up in Lagos, Nigeria and relocated to Oklahoma City with his family at the age of 13. Influences from his African roots, Red Dirt Music, likes of Jack Johnson, Mumford and Sons, and Coldplay, lay a foundation for the melodic and soulful tunes he considers Indie Folk.”

You might think the artists along Paseo Drive would be ready to take a break after welcoming thousands of people from all over America for the annual Paseo Arts Festival. But just as the May 28-30 event wrapped up and the hundreds of visiting artists began to pack up, the Paseo regulars began to focus on the monthly gallery walk, which has become a friendly and familiar showcase for the area’s creative spirits.

As is the case every month, more than 80 artists in more than 25 galleries participate, all within walking distance.

Four to six Art Opening Receptions on Friday night showcase the new work of the gallery/studio owners or the work of guest artists. Many galleries offer lite refreshments.

Each First Friday of the month, Paseo galleries offer special themed exhibits, refreshments, guest artists and a variety of entertainment opportunities. Paseo, Oklahoma City’s historic arts district is Oklahoma’s City’s art community. Dozens of galleries, three restaurants and a handful of shops stand in distinctive Spanish Mission Revival style buildings, all within walking distance.

Once you visit for a First Friday Gallery Walk, you will want to linger for the Paseo’s unique atmosphere. The walk starts on Friday at 6 p.m. and lasts until 10 p.m. Some galleries offer lite refreshments and two food trucks will be available.
