Gay Rodeo returns to Oklahoma City with three days of competition at State Fair Park

The Oklahoma Gay Rodeo Association will celebrate 30 years of The Great Plains Rodeo, May 22-May 24 at State Fair Park in Oklahoma City. Tickets to the rodeo are $5 per day.

Programs begin earlier in the week in anticipation of the rodeo itself. Wednesday, May 20 at 8 p.m.,  “The Finishline Presents: Rodeo Idol Finals.” then, on Thursday, May 21, “The Phoenix Rising Presents: OKC Rodeo Spotlight 8-10 p.m.

On Friday, May 22, “Sisters on the Fly will host a tour of their Fabulous Travel Trailers, 4-6 p.m. at the Fairgrounds RV Park. Stop by for a tour and meet the wonderful ladies of Sisters on the Fly.”

Friday events continue with the “Stick Horse Rodeo” at Barn 6, 7-9 p.m. That’s followed by “The Copa Presents: Rodeo Royalty Review Show,” lasting from 9-11 p.m.

Day #1 of the rodeo itself is Saturday, May 23. Events start at 8:30 am at the State Fair Park Grounds in Barns 6 & 7. (Start time will be posted at Registration. Beginning @ 8pm Angles Nightclub Presents will present “The TEXAS TEA PARTY!” There will be no cover charge.

Following that show, organizers have scheduled a concert at 10:30pm featuring the Rodeo Idol Winner, Iris, Mary Reynolds & Miss Brown To You. There is a suggested $10 Donation for Concert.

On Sunday, May 24, it’s Day #2 of Rodeo, kicking oiff at 8:30 a.m. in Barns 6 & 7. (Start time will be posted at Registration.)

The Great Plains Rodeo Award Ceremony, at The Copa, will immediate follow the rodeo.

Then, on Monday, May 25, The Boom will present. “The Rodeo Recovery Party at Noon.”

According to the sponsoring association’s website, “In 1986. OGRA members combined resources with the Kansas and Missouri gay rodeo associations to form the Great Plains Regional Rodeo and held the first ever GPRR in August of the same year – a great success.

In 1992, the GPRR was moved to Memorial Day weekend where it remains today and in that same year Arkansas joined the three existing organizations, OGRA, KGRA and MGRA and produced the GPRR until 1999. Then, the four state organizations split to enable each to hold their own respective rodeos. OGRA dropped ‘Regional’ from our rodeo name to become the Great Plains Rodeo and continue the event Memorial Day weekend in Oklahoma City. … We are proud that each year the Great Plains Rodeo (GPR) ranks in the top 4 rodeos of the 18 to 20 produced by state/province associations each year in the IGRA rodeo circuit.”

This year’s rodeo officials include Director Mary Arbuckle, Assistant Directors Paul Boyd and Steve Sublett, President Jeff Germany, Arena Director Jeanne McLoud, Chute Coordinator Jay Beck, Arena Crew Coordinator Barry Richardson, Scorekeeper: John Ahrens, Assistant Scorekeeper Michael Norman, Rodeo Secretary Guy Puglisi (Porkchop), athe following judges: Rick Jones, Dee Zuspann, Tom Sheridan, and Terry Covington. The 2015 announces will be Christopher Wilson, Luxx Bentley, and Franklin Thompson.

Proceeds from The Great Plains Rodeo benefit a wide range of charitable causes, including Other Options, Inc., Rain Oklahoma, Infant Crises Services, Inc and the Young Gay/Lesbian Alliance.
