As spring break draws to a close, the Plaza District will host a new public art event. The Sidewalk Chalk Rock Exhibition will be sponsored by District businesses.
On Friday, March 20th, sponsoring Plaza businesses will host 2-3 artists, or artist teams of their choosing, to create chalk art compositions on site-specific District sidewalks. Each work of art must be finished by noon the following day.
On Saturday, March 21 beginning at noon the entire community, whether artists or non-artists, are encouraged to pick up chalk at the sponsoring business locations and join in chalking up some fun.
This family and pet friendly art event will take place on Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. The public is invited to attend both days to see these colorful and creative works of art come to life.
“This event is a great way for people of all ages to see art being made on the street, without all the huge crowds that our LIVE on the Plaza and Festival events bring,” said Kristen Vails, Executive Director, Plaza District Association.
“We are excited to offer this family friendly event in addition to all the great shopping, eating and drinking there is to do on a weekend in the Plaza District.”
There is no charge to attend or participate in the fun filled three-day celebration. In addition, attendees will be able to place their votes for the Viewer’s Choice Award for their favorite artwork creation via the Plaza District website, beginning Sunday March 22 and remaining open through Saturday, March 28.
Following the close of the event the artist or artist team selected for the Viewer’s Choice Award will receive a cash prize; also compliments of the Plaza businesses.
“Chalk artworks are an ephemeral extension of public art,” said Vails. “You cannot buy them or take them home but you can experience them for a limited time. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to be a part of the creativity this March 20th-22nd in Oklahoma City’s Plaza District.”
Sponsoring Plaza businesses include 180 Residential Group, Collected Thread, District House, DNA Galleries, Empire Slice House, Graphite Elements & Design, Kasum Contemporary Fine Art, The Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma, No Regrets Tattoo, Oak & Ore, Out On A Limb, Paint & Cheers, The Parish, Pie Junkie, Saint’s Pub, and Tree & Leaf Clothing Company.
The Plaza District Association works to develop the Plaza District as a lively, commercial area where art, local business, and neighborhood community can flourish. Creating a sense of community and an opportunity for people to interact with art and artists is a priority for the District.
One of Oklahoma City’s most notable, emerging arts and culture hubs, the Plaza District is supported up by monthly and annual gatherings, and a wide array of products and services that Plaza businesses offer.
Should the Chalk Rock Exhibition be canceled due to inclement weather, the event dates will be moved to the fourth weekend in April.
