Oklahoma City’s women’s political recruitment organization Sally’s List has announced that its third annual Powerful Women Luncheon will be held on Thursday, March 5. The event will take place from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Will Roger’s Theatre, 4332 N. Western.

The “Powerful Women” theme highlights the role of women in leadership at all levels across the state and the work of Sally’s List in training and advancing women to run for public office in Oklahoma.

This year’s keynote speaker will be former two-term Governor of Michigan Jennifer Granholm. A well respected speaker and political figure, she was Michigan’s first female chief executive.

“We are very excited about this year’s lunch celebrating Powerful Women,” said Sara Jane Rose, Sally’s List founder and board president. “Governor Granholm is an incredible example of leadership and determination and the ability of women to make a difference.”

Author of “A Governor’s Story: The Fight for Jobs and America’s Economic Future,” Granholm is considered an expert in alternative energy strategy and economic recovery.

She is remembered for her impassioned and rousing speech at the 2012 Democratic Convention about which she said she was “high on democracy.”

Former Oklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson referred to Granholm as a, “very gifted speaker and accomplished leader.”

Granholm currently teaches at the University of California-Berkeley.

For the first time the luncheon will present a silent auction.

“This year we are also thrilled to highlight the diverse and talented community of Oklahoma women artists through a silent auction featuring 20 uniquely adorned shrines,” Rose added. “I expect to see amazing results.”

Featured Oklahoma artists will include Diana J. Smith, Kerri Shadid, Ronna Pernell, Stacey D. Miller, Suzanne Peck and Marilyn Artus.

Smith said, “I am honored to be in such great company and very anxious to see the different directions and interpretations.”

Sally’s List recruits and trains progressive women to run for political office in Oklahoma. Rose said, “I founded Sally’s List in 2010 because while the population of Oklahoma is 51 percent women, the legislature is just 12.8 percent women.

“Studies have shown that when women serve in state legislature, they consistently author legislation that benefits women and children.”

According to Rose, when women are actively recruited and educated in the campaign process, they become enthusiastic and viable candidates.

“Studies show that when women run for office, they win in equal numbers to men,” Rose added.

“It’s not that Oklahomans don’t want to vote for women. There just aren’t enough female candidates to vote for.

“We know that female legislators are more likely than males to prioritize issues relating to women’s rights, health care, children and families, education, environment, housing and the elderly.”

Sally’s List is named in honor of Oklahoma native Sally Rae Merkle Mock, a strong advocate for women’s rights who died in 2009.

“Bringing women’s life experiences and priorities to the legislative process is the key to achieving much-needed change in Oklahoma’s public policy and how it affects women, children and, indeed, all Oklahomans.” said Rose.

Individual tickets cost $50 and sponsorships of $500 or more include admission to a private reception honoring Gov. Granholm at the home of Governor David & Rhonda Walters on the evening of March 5.

Rose added, “If we truly want Oklahoma to be a safe, healthy and prosperous place for our daughters to call home, we must take action in the political arena now.”
