The Oklahoma County Democratic Party (OCDP) will hold precinct meetings and elections Thursday, March 14, at 7 p.m. This year precincts will gather according to House Districts (HD).
All registered Oklahoma County Democrats who attend precinct meetings are eligible to become officers or committee members.
Marguerite McGuffin, OCDP Chair said, “This is the start of the statewide election process by which we select our Oklahoma Democratic Party leaders for the next two years. This selection starts with Precinct Meetings.”
In each Precinct Meeting three officers, Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary, will be selected from each of the approximately 250 precincts in Oklahoma County. Chair and Vice Chair officers must be of opposite genders. Also, the House District Chair and Vice Chair will be elected.
In addition, all proposed resolutions to be submitted for use in the party platform will be considered at each precinct meeting. If approved, the resolutions will be forwarded to the County Convention. Participants wishing to have a resolution considered must bring it typed or printed to the precinct meeting.
The elected officers will then become delegates to the Oklahoma County Democratic Convention on Saturday, April 6, at IBEW Local 1141, 1700 S.E. 15 St., in Oklahoma City. Credentialing will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the County Convention starts at 10 a.m.
At the Congressional District Conventions on Saturday, May 4, the Congressional District Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary will be elected as well as one male and one female to serve on the Affirmative Action Committee.
The State Democratic Convention will be held on the weekend of May 19, where the Oklahoma Democratic Party Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary will be elected.
Delegates elected at the State Convention participate in the National Convention where the Democratic Party will select their candidate for the next presidential election.
The precinct is the smallest political unit in Oklahoma politics. There are 1,956 precincts in Oklahoma. Precincts range in size from fewer than 100 to over 2,000 registered voters. In a close election, whether statewide or local, a strong precinct operation can often decide the outcome.
“This series of organizational meetings will define what direction the Oklahoma County Democratic Party will take during the 2014 election cycle,” said McGuffin. “Oklahoma County represents over 30 percent of the state’s electorate.”
“We are accepting names of individuals who would like to be candidates for the next OCDP Chair,” McGuffin added. “Elected Precinct Committee Officers will decide who the next Party officers will be. If you have expectations about our Party’s direction and leadership, then these grassroots meetings are where you should be on Thursday evening, March 14.”
The Oklahoma County Democratic Party encourages all interested citizens in Oklahoma County to take part in this political process. Find your precinct by visiting www.ok.gov/elections/ppl/index.php.
