Staff report

First Baptist Church of Oklahoma City (FBCOKC) welcomes lyricist Ragan Courtney and his wife, Grammy award-winning singer Cynthia Clawson, in two special performances at the church on Sunday, March 17.

Courtney will direct a new, updated performance of his famed musical, “Celebrate Life!” on Sunday, March 17, at 10:30 a.m in the FBCOKC sanctuary. FBCOKC music ministers Bruce and Kim Greer will perform with Courtney and Clawson, along with other vocalists and a dramatic troupe.
First performed in 1972, this classic musical, which Courtney wrote along with lyricist Buryl Red, stands as one of the most popular Christian musicals of all time, having sold more than 1 million copies—more than any other church musical in history. “In Remembrance,” has become the most popular song of the musical and now appears in several hymnals.

Courtney has published five books of poetry, 11 Christian musicals, numerous individual songs and one Broadway musical. “Celebrate Life” tells the story of Jesus in simple, dramatic terms. When they wrote it, Courtney and Red hoped “that the message and music will communicate to young and old alike in a way that will permit all persons to celebrate the life of Jesus Christ, our Lord.”

At 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 17, Clawson will perform in concert in the church’s sanctuary. Clawson’s voice was dubbed “The most awesome voice in gospel music” by Billboard Magazine. She has received a Grammy and five Dove Awards for her work. Bruce Greer will provide musical accompaniment for Clawson’s performance.

Both programs are free and open to the public. For more information, call the church at 405-235-4255.
