Oklahoma City Chapter of Americans United for Separation of Church & State drew a packed house for a public debate on at Oklahoma City Community College on whether or not the Uni
ted States Constitution is a framework for a Christ
ian nation.
The formal topic was “Resolved, the United States Constitution neither established nor advoc
ates for a Christian Nation.” Arguing in the affirmative was Dr. Bruce Prescott, Executive Director of Mainstream Oklahoma Baptists and President of the Norman, Oklahoma Chapter of Americans United for Separation of Church and
State. Dr. Steve Kern, pastor of Olivet Baptist Church in Oklahoma City and husband of state Rep. Sally Kern, argued in the negative.
Kern argued from the writings of some diverse American founders and other evidence. Prescott contended, “When the constitution was written ministers denounced it for being a ‘godless constitution’; Today, ministers are determined to read between the lines to fin
d God,” Prescott said.
Event moderator was Mike Fuller, chapter president for Americans United. Jim Shields, board member of the Interfaith Alliance of Oklahoma, conducted the debate and post-debate Question and Answer session. Americans United describes itself as “a nonpartisan organization dedicated to preserving the constitutional principle of
church-state separation as the only way to ensure religious freedom for all Americans.”
