Partnership will increase level of choral music education in Oklahoma County
Canterbury Choral Society and The Boys and Girls Clubs of Oklahoma County recently announced the creation of a strategic partnership for children in the Oklahoma City Metro. This new partnership creates a youth choral program for the students of the Boys and Girls Club of Oklahoma County.
The program takes place on Mondays from 5:00pm-6:30pm through the school year. Curriculum will be designed and specialized in the integration of life skills and lessons for children and the curriculum currently in use for the Canterbury Youth Choruses (CYC).
“The partnership with Boys and Girls Clubs helps to fulfill our vision of expanding our outreach and providing vocal music training and performance opportunities,” said J. Warren Mitchell, Coordinator of Education and School Partnerships at Canterbury .
Judith Willoughby, Artistic Director of CYC believes the partnership will help further music education in Oklahoma City public schools.
“The purpose of Canterbury Youth Choruses’ partnership with the Boys and Girls Clubs is to further build upon the work in the public schools by fostering an even deeper musical knowledge, vocal performance skills and appropriate performance opportunities for its members.”
Current national studies show that youth who participate in choruses have significantly more academic success, better problem solving skills, and are more engaged in civic activities than their peers who do not participate in choruses. Canterbury is pleased to invest in Oklahoma City ‘s future by providing a program that will not only develop and enhance music and life skills, but contribute to the vibrant future of Oklahoma City ’s youth.
“Music enables Youth to develop their creativity and cultural awareness through artistic expression – This partnership is vital to the growth of children in Oklahoma City , “said Douglas Gibson, Executive Director of Boys and Girls Clubs of Oklahoma County.
